Forestry Related Business Opportunities

There are numerous business opportunities in relation to forestry. A timber project is the major business within the forest industry. However, non-timber forest products (NTFPs) have high potential, and have made in-roads in their development in the last five years. These NTFPs include eaglewood and sandalwood development. The other area is the development of rattan and medicinal plants.

Another potential in forestry is carbon trade under the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol.


Forest Licensing System of PNG

There are two types of timber licenses in Papua New Guinea. One is for big timber concession areas where a timber permit is issued prior to undertaking all the pre-requisites to developing a forest project. And in the case of small operations under the Timber Authority system, a Timber Authority is issued again prior to accomplishing the pre-requisites required in processing the various types of Timber Authorities.
